I found the cause of this problem: A held package was blocking python from being upgraded properly.
The error messages of the upgrader were not very helpful in finding out the real reason, though. It might be a good idea to have the updater issue a general, prominent warning when it encounters held packages on the system BEFORE caclulating the upgrade - or at least if calculating an upgrade fails. ** Summary changed: - [hardy->lucid] unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade + held packages can cause "unresolvable problem" error on upgrade. no comprehensive hint given. ** Summary changed: - held packages can cause "unresolvable problem" error on upgrade. no comprehensive hint given. + held packages may cause "unresolvable problem" error on upgrade. no comprehensive hint given. ** Attachment removed: "Required log files (see bug text)" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1112336/+attachment/3510077/+files/var-log-dist-upgrade.tbz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1112336 Title: held packages may cause "unresolvable problem" error on upgrade. no comprehensive hint given.
