I #remmed the line "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" from 
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.
Cold boot, and m-audio card now shows up as Number 0 in the alsamixer. Clear 
progress.  Tried to download a .pls file and play in audaciuos and I can see 
signal levels in the audacious window, but the program returns "ALSA error 
snd_mixer_find_selem failed. "  Closer yet but no sound. I remember when the 
card worked, it was in default position # 0 in ALSAMIXER, the way it now is. It 
came up in Mudita24 as m-audio 2496 but does not do so now. Very close. Dual 
boot uefi BIOS lists onboard audio as disabled.
