I was asked to show the output of 'perf top', but perf appears to be missing from the 3.8.0-4 kernel in raring.
** Tags added: apport-collected running-unity ** Description changed: Something is wrong in raring. After upgrade, I have twice run into a problem where firefox takes over 100% of a CPU, X takes 100% of another, and the desktop is completely unresponsive (even to the point that the cursor doesn't move and I can't switch VTs). The reason I'm filing this bug against the kernel, however, is that this time I decided to kill -9 firefox... and *it's not working*. So something is seriously wrong with this kernel, because kill -9 shouldn't fail. $ uname -a Linux virgil 3.8.0-4-generic #8-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 1 18:02:56 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ - More debugging information will be available once I figure out how to - successfully recover the desktop session. + More debugging information will be available once I figure out how to successfully recover the desktop session. + --- + ApportVersion: 2.8-0ubuntu4 + Architecture: amd64 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USER PID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC1: vorlon 3703 F.... pulseaudio + /dev/snd/pcmC1D0c: vorlon 3703 F...m pulseaudio + /dev/snd/controlC0: vorlon 3703 F.... pulseaudio + /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: vorlon 3703 F...m pulseaudio + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=f6ab3c43-61b4-4af7-bf03-fa3b147a1de0 + InstallationDate: Installed on 2010-09-24 (866 days ago) + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release amd64 (20100816.1) + MachineType: LENOVO 3249CTO + MarkForUpload: True + Package: linux (not installed) + ProcFB: 0 inteldrmfb + ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-3.8.0-4-generic root=/dev/mapper/hostname-root ro quiet splash --verbose vt.handoff=7 + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.8.0-4.8-generic 3.8.0-rc6 + RelatedPackageVersions: + linux-restricted-modules-3.8.0-4-generic N/A + linux-backports-modules-3.8.0-4-generic N/A + linux-firmware 1.100 + Tags: raring running-unity + Uname: Linux 3.8.0-4-generic x86_64 + UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to raring on 2013-01-25 (12 days ago) + UserGroups: adm admin cdrom dialout libvirtd lpadmin mythtv plugdev sambashare src sudo + WifiSyslog: + + dmi.bios.date: 08/23/2010 + dmi.bios.vendor: LENOVO + dmi.bios.version: 6QET52WW (1.22 ) + dmi.board.name: 3249CTO + dmi.board.vendor: LENOVO + dmi.board.version: Not Available + dmi.chassis.asset.tag: No Asset Information + dmi.chassis.type: 10 + dmi.chassis.vendor: LENOVO + dmi.chassis.version: Not Available + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnLENOVO:bvr6QET52WW(1.22):bd08/23/2010:svnLENOVO:pn3249CTO:pvrThinkPadX201:rvnLENOVO:rn3249CTO:rvrNotAvailable:cvnLENOVO:ct10:cvrNotAvailable: + dmi.product.name: 3249CTO + dmi.product.version: ThinkPad X201 + dmi.sys.vendor: LENOVO -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1117499 Title: killall -9 firefox fails to work in raring To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1117499/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
