The bug still exists after testing the latest kernel builds ( 3.8.0-030800rc7). I would be very surprized if this was a kernel bug, however, since USB drives are still easily mounted manually, as I noted above.
This appears to be a Nautilus or Unity bug, considering the fact that whatever automount function that should be doing this within the GUI is not performing.
