The bug still exists after testing the latest kernel builds (   
3.8.0-030800rc7).
I would be very surprized if this was a kernel bug, however, since USB drives 
are still easily mounted manually, as I noted above.

This appears to be a Nautilus or Unity bug, considering the fact that
whatever automount function that should be doing this within the GUI is
not performing.

What is the process or function that monitors the insertion of plug and
play drives then mounts them?
