Only the Backports team can actually approve backports so the other
process is the official way to let them know.
If you want to post a .debdiff to fix the build failure, we can sponsor
that for you into raring (just subscribe ubuntu-sponsors). I'm sure the
Backports team would be happier if the new version built on the current
Ubuntu development version.
