I also tried installing an alternate image under virtualbox rather than on actual hardware and noticed that after the system boots, I see the same issues as noted in comment #13. I tried installing virtualbox-ose-guest-dkms to see if it would help and got a build error on the module: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1641967/
