Thank you for answering. At least now I understand *why* you are doing this 
beyond "we want to". And thank you for keeping the project open source so I can 
say "no" to your "no" :)

For anyone interested, I have scripted a process that will check for
updates to the raring unity package sources, download them, apply my
patch, and if everything is successful, upload the repackaged source to
my PPA. This should keep my PPA up to date with the official releases
with minimal effort on my part.
