It won’t crash anymore, since the ffmpeg pseudo-format that provided
support for m4a (among others) has been removed in 14.4.0-5.

The recommended procedure for file types that aren’t supported in SoX is to 
either use the ffmpeg/avconv command line program directly for conversions, or 
(if you want to apply effects etc.) to pipe its output into SoX, like this:
ffmpeg -i input.m4a -f sox - | sox -p output.mp3 effects
