I discussed this bug with the #radeon, #nouveau and #xorg IRC channels.

We discovered that I was able to boot when booting with the
nouveau.modeset=0 kernel parameter. (The radeon.modeset=0 kernel
parameter had no effect).

After the machine is booted, attempting to "modprobe -v nouveau
modeset=1" causes the machine to hard reboot consistently, same as
happens during the boot process.

We tried attaching a netconsole, but nothing was printed to it except
some swap messages on bootup.

It looks like this bug is related to the nouveau drm module.
