Some more news: I installed Kubuntu 12.04 - no problems Updated to Kubuntu 12.10 - no problems
Then I worked with the system for a while. Today, I paired my Plantronics Bluetooth headset, and the noise reappeared. I posted about this issue on Google+ [1], and it turns out that I'm not the only one who faces this issue: "I installed pavucontrol (it pulls many gnome libs) and found volume levels of sound input devices are set to 25000%—64000% (sic!). Using pavucontrol I can set them to more reasonable levels of 80%—100% but if you move input level sliders in kmix volume levels get back to 25000%—64000%."
