Interesting - it's completely failing to notice the existence of the account. I've had another go at reproducing this on an amd64 feisty box talking to a Debian server but everything seems to work fine for me.
What is the output of 'ypmatch -k barney passwd.byname' (this tests the per-key lookup that libc should be doing)?
