well, I created a second user and now I can test Unity again. Something got extremely borked in the config. I will keep the two users to see if the original one eventually get fixed through a new update. I recently tested cinnamon from the repos which had its own oddity (you need to install caribou). This is the fun of the developmental releases thing are working... then they break. Then... hopefully they start working again!
