Problem solved. I checked the BIOS and found the setting "AGP Aperture
Size" which was set to 256 MB. Manually setting the undocumented
"GARTSize" parameter to match this (256) causes DRI to initalize
correctly!

All error messages are gone, except for the "mtrr: no MTRR for
e0000000,4000000 found" one.

Seems that the Radeon driver (or is it the AGP driver?) fails to
correctly detect the AGP Aperture Size and needs to be fed it manually.

:-D.

Now AIGLX is failing with:
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x24

(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/r200_dri.so
(II) GLX: Initialized DRI GL provider for screen 0

But that's another issue entirely...

Please close this issue as "worked around with an undocumented xorg.conf
hack" or something like that :-).
