I have the same problem with an external USB2 Iomega hard disk under
feisty. Bulk copying from an NFS share on a different machine causes it
to fail in the same way, especially when copying lots of small files.

My setup is AMD based, quite old, based on an AMI BIOS. Onboard USB is
v1.1, so this is via a USB2 PCI card (VIA based I think)

Using the command "sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd" before connecting the
drive seems to resolve the error but I am not sure about how it has
affected speed. I havent one any time trials, but left it copying data
yesterday and it took about 12 hours to do 60GB of data, which, by my
(dubious) reckoning, works out around 11Mb per sec
