I can also confirm this bug. It also happens with MP3's by the way. Its Using the crossfading plugin also fixes the issue for me.
The word I would use to describe it is choppyness. Like it gets amplified beyond its reach. The fact that the crossfading makes it go away, suggests it not related to file-type, but rather with the output plugin.
