Happened again. Always the thunderbird launcher icon (in this case
thunderbird was already open). The system had been running for a long
time.

This time, like the first time, I couldn't do ctrl+alt+F1 because it
didn't respond even to keyboard. So I had to power down and lost all my
unsaved data.

This is critical.
Almost certainly triggered by some huge bug in Thunderbird, but on a decent OS 
neiter the most buggy or malicious program should ever, ever, be able to render 
the whole system unrecoverable.

This kind of thing didn't happen with gnome by the way. Every major
release of Ubuntu is a step backwards in stability. It has already got
below Windows Vista and Windows ME. Linux is considered the most stable,
secure and reliable OS, Ubuntu is on its way to become the most unstable
and unreliable ever.
