I'm on 12.10 kernel 3.5.0-25 and I'm booting off an SSD (which seems to be a common symptom).
When the blanks screen occurs, I know it wants the FS crypt password. So I type it in blind on this black screen. Then the rest of boot occurs normally. I never see the Grub screen. I tried adding a 5 second sleep before the "exec lightdm" line on /etc/init/lightdm.conf. This did not solve the problem.
