After fiddling and searching, I restarted samba (sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart). And then I commented out "msdfs proxy = no" and restarted samba.
And voila! It's now working. I can dupllicate the problem. If I put in "msdfs proxy = no" in my smb.conf and restart samba, it won't work.
