Been searching for how to resolve this issue (I run CentOS 6.3 and have
experienced this) and  could'nt find a resolution.  This might be a bit
late  late for most people might be worth a go.  I have added the
following line to /etc/rc.d/rc.local file (so it get s run at boot time)

echo -1 >/sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend

The laptop  (so far) not locked up when on battery,  I had to do the
same for a HP nN40L microserver and thought I'd give it a go on the
laptop as well to see if it helps - so far it's been good for me
