I was affected by this bug. In mid January I Installed PSensor on my Laptop . I found very high temp spikes before the fan would increase speed. The graphing mode of PSensor helped me see this. I installed thinkfan, and set up the parameters to start the fan at low temps (2900 rpm at 48c and full fan by 54c) . I have not had a single crash since. I have to conclude that these crashes were from a fan profile change that came with 12.04 and continued with 12.10.
