As I understand it, the existing API says this to applications: "Okay,
we're exiting the session. Prompt to save changes if you need to, and
let us know if you have to cancel the logout for whatever reason."

It seems to me you're trying to use it to mean something else: "We're
not exiting the session right now. We'd just like to know if you would
need to prompt to save changes if we *were* exiting."

If you want an API for that purpose, then add it and get it
standardized. But I think that would be a high cost to pay, just to
customize the text in the Log Out dialog. Just make the text constant
like it is in other OSes.
