I'm not surprised that the bug is a Grub issue. I am running Ubuntu on a
dual boot system along side of Windows XP (service pack 3) and a few
years ago had lots of trouble with the dual boot. It stopped working
after I ran an Ubuntu update. Windows became unbootable, while Ubuntu
would still boot as I remember, but I got lots of error messages from
Grub. This necessitated reinstalling Windows from scratch at which point
I abandoned Ubuntu and the dual boot. However I continued to get
occasional messages from Grub on booting up from a cold start into
Windows. The cure was, and still is, to hit reset and try again. Grub
doesn't complain again and the boot into Windows works. Recently, having
reread the dual boot installation instructions, I decided to reinstall
Ubuntu again along side of Windows using a slightly different setup and
now it seems to be working okay, except once in a while I still get
messages from Grub complaining about something or other and have to go
through the reset and reboot procedure. I should also mention that as a
result of reinstalling Windows I have 4 dead entries and 1 live entry in
my boot menu when it first comes up. The first five all point to Windows
XP but only the first one works and goes to a live copy of Windows. The
last entry in the list, number 6, is for Ubuntu. That also works.

I do not know if this helps by supplying some context. I hope it does.

And, I am amazed and pleased at how fast you guys (and your bot)
responded to my bug report. That's a very good sign.
