This is a follow up to bug report 121105, which as far as I can tell
remains unaddressed. Ubuntu 7.04 had been working fine with respect to
sound so long as I did not install the following updates: linux-headers-
generic, linux-image-generic, and linux-restricted-modules-generic. I'm
not sure which one of these three was disabling sound, but at least one
was. Today, however, package manager informed me of a new set of 33
updates, and I installed all except the three aforementioned. Once
again, my sound is totally disabled. Most of what was installed were
updates to open office and firefox, but I don't know how to generate a
list of all the new installs.
Following the advice of a related post, I tried:
sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset
which generated an output that looked like this
* Resetting ALSA...
amixer: Mixer hw:0 load error: Invalid argument
the last line was repeated about 50 times.
Help! I don't want to have to reinstall ubuntu for the 100th time.
