anders, can you try ac97_quirk=hp_only and retry the multimedia keys?
i.e.,
kill $(lsof -t /dev/dsp* /dev/audio* /dev/mixer* /dev/seq* /dev/snd/*) && sudo
rmmod snd-intel8x0 && sudo modprobe snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=hp_only
