I had exactly the same problem as squealermusic above (crash on record action with "Assertion `dsp->fd < 0' failed"). Ubuntu 12.04 and Scratch 1.4 on IBM machine with Intel HDA integrated audio.
After a lot of troubleshooting I stumbled on the solution: I picked up a driver from here: http://voices.canonical.com/david.henningsson/2013/01/18/upcoming-changes-to-the-intel-hda-drivers/ ... and replaced "-vm-sound-oss" with "-vm-sound-pulse" in file "/usr/bin/scratch" (must be root for this). I also had choppy sound before (meaw) and that was fixed with appending " tsched=0" to this line "load-module module-udev-detect" in file "/etc/pulse/default.pa" (+reboot).
