I'd like to reiterate at this point that the solution Thomas proposed solves the problem of the Asus X201E not being able to go into standby on Ubuntu 13.04. After several reboots & suspends, the bug is not coming back, and I'm delighted about it! So, to recapitulate how to fix it:
1. Open terminal and paste the following: sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf 2. Add this line to the end of the config-file that opened and save it: blacklist alx 3. Reboot. At this point, thumbs up and many thanks again to Thomas - it was indeed the ethernet driver messing up the ability to go into suspend more than once.
