Due to the new "multiarch" dpkg feature, you can have the same library
installed for multiple architectures simultaneously. This is useful for
running i386 binaries on an amd64 system, among other things. However,
the versions of the installed packages must always match, because they
share architecture-independent files.
You'll need to also grab the new i386 binary and install both of them in
the same dpkg invocation.
