I had this problem with 12.04 with the device plugged into a standard USB slot on the back of the machine itself.
But.... When I plugged it into an existing powered USB port instead of directly into the back of the machine it worked fine.... And still does after several reboots. No idea why.... It's just a simple NEWLINK 4slot box which also has the Wireless adaptor and the printer plugged in.
