** Description changed:

  Hi,

- I have a AMD Athlon XP 2000+ and have a Nvidia GeForce 2 MX/MX400 with
- 512 MB RAM. I had a ATI Radeon 9600XT, but was forced to switch back to
- my old GeForce 2 because the Radeon was causing my desktop to crash
- since 6.10. Currently I have 7.04 with all updates.

The closest bug I found on Launchpad is #43961
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/43961. My problem: if I try and
restart from the desktop, I get a black screen, my monitor (Cornea
CT1701) goes into standby and nothing happens. I do believe that the
computer logs out, but I cannot confirm because I cannot see anything.
If I logout first and restart from the login, it works. I can halt my
computer from the desktop. I am talking about using the GUI and not
  commands.

Also sometimes when the computer starts up, I can see the splash all
fine, but the monitor goes into standby when the GDM starts up. I can
login and logout and restart the Xserver which brings the monitor back
- online, however restarting the Xserver ([Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Backspace]) does
- not work. I first have to login.
+ online, however trying to restarting the Xserver
+ ([Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Backspace]) first does not work.

What really bugs me is that I cannot change to the command line
([Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F...]). At no point. The screen monitor switches to
standby and I cannot restart the computer nor the Xserver. Only holding
  the power button.

I am using the proprietary driver, but will soon try without because I
do not play games nor do I need any 3D acceleration.

Thanks for the help. If you need dmesg or I will post it.

EDIT: I forgot to add that I had 1024 MB RAM, but one was corrupt and I
had to take it out. I will check later if it really was or just my
  Radeon at the point.
