I've re-tested using a kernel from v3.9-rc6-raring, specifically linux-
image-3.9.0-030900rc6-generic_3.9.0-030900rc6.201304080035_amd64.deb .
I'm still seeing the crash (which appears to be just a hung system as I
can't see anything on the display).

Just to confirm:

jim@hobbes:~$ uname -a
Linux hobbes 3.9.0-030900rc6-generic #201304080035 SMP Mon Apr 8 04:36:25 UTC 
2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
