Interestingly there might be two separate issues here. Last night I pulled the laptop out of the dock while running and got visible corruption. Restarting compiz/unity had _no_ effect. I restarted the machine and then much later I docked the laptop while running and got the usual corruption. However this time, restarting unity made the issue go away.
