Interestingly there might be two separate issues here.

Last night I pulled the laptop out of the dock while running and got visible 
corruption. Restarting compiz/unity had _no_ effect.
I restarted the machine and then much later I docked the laptop while running 
and got the usual corruption. However this time, restarting unity made the 
issue go away.

The "undocking" corruption is what you see in the video in comment #2
The "docking" corruption is less pronounced, with more text on screen in a 
readable state.
