Read the whole message: it says "Last login: Tue Jul 24 14:42:35 2007 on tty5" or similar; in other words it's simply indicating (uselessly) the order in which the login processes on each tty started. In Brian's case this means they happened to start in order 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 6 for whatever reason.
