I had this bug ever for several years, ever since installing ubuntu on an
Advent 5411, over several different versions including
10.10 and 12.04 (current). Previously, if I wanted to use headphones on this
machine, I had to use an external USB sound card.

After confirming this bug, I did a little more googling regarding
SigmaTel STAC 9205 Headphone Jack problems and found a fix in this link:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1219505

In my case (12.04), this was a case of editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base.conf to add the following line at the bottom:

  options snd-hda-intel model=eapd position_fix=1

Followed by a reboot. This fixed the problem for me and now I can use
the headphone jack for the first time ever.

Hope this helps someone.
