I don't know all the specifics but this bug occurs when trying to parse some of the gpg info. What seemed to work for me was deleting (or renaming) /etc/apt/trusted.gpg. I don't know the full ramifications are for doing this but one side effect is getting "can't verify" warnings when apt-get updating.
