I have been on google looking into this issue (which I did not have the time for at work earlier).
I found this error has been reported dating back to 2009. I also found that this is not isolated to the Ubuntu kernel as I found reports on Fedora as well. So the problem is across distributions and has existed for some time. I found that the majority of other users from the brief reading I did only experienced disconnected wifi. However in my case, this issue resulted in data loss due to the hard lock I experienced.
