So in my case it seems like the new kernel gave priority to the Intel card and that's why my screen no longer worked. I fixed this by adding "radeon.modeset=1 video=LVDS:1600x900" to my kernel cmdline in grub. This forces the ATI driver to take over and things are back to how they were before.
