This is happening with me as well. All I need to do is right-click on a file in Nautilus and select "Rename", and then my laptop's fan sspins up and after 30 seconds or so Nautilus terminates. (Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome Shell 3.4). I see this in dmesg:
