I'm also having problems with an chrome chipset. So far I've only tested with a liveCD.
lspci shows: VGA compatible controller [0300]: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN896/VN896/P4M900 [Chrome 9 HC] [1106:3371] (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) I'm not getting the artefacts that the OP is getting, but the screen is rendering in slow motion and I notice that compiz is maxing out the CPU much of the time. Trying to do anything with the PC is like the proverbial wading through molasses. I don't remember if I've run 12.10 on this machine, but 12.04 and previous versions have been fine.
