The freeze happens with or without the Desktop effects and/or GL Desktop
activated. I don't have Beryl installed. I tried running ooimpress from
console but yes I don't get any information that way because of X
freezing.
In case it matters, here is the relevant sections or xorg.conf related
to the screen display:
