I have the Aspire 5742Z, same issue exactly as you described. However, per a forum I found online relating to a different Asus product, I got the hotkeys to work by changing the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT variable to "acpi_osi=" instead of "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT"
Please note, this ONLY fixes the hotkeys, and actually breaks the brightness selection bar under system settings.
