I'm running without freezes now for a couple of days after setting "Windows animations" off in Myunity.
It's too early to call it a workaround yet but i'm hopefull it will solve my problems just like it did in Ubuntu 10. @Joe Carey: if you experience freezes without running X it's more than likely that we experience the same symptoms for a different problem.
