I finally stumbled upon the source of the problem. I installed the ubuntu-mobile-default-settings package, not knowing what it would really do (I thought it was kind of complementary with ubuntu-mobile-icons). But it installed Devilspie and forced all my windows to start maximized and without window decoration. So this was not a bug at all, though I think there should be some kind of explanation as to what the ubuntu-mobile-default-settings does in the Software Center. I marked the bug as Invalid. Sorry if anyone wasted their time on this.
