Using xrandr on the command line does work:

$ xrandr -q | grep " connected"
LVDS1 connected 1280x800+0+280 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 286mm 
x 179mm
HDMI1 connected 1920x1080+1280+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 
598mm x 336mm

$ xrandr --output LVDS1 --brightness 0.5
