The upstream Linux 3.9 kernel finally contains ZPODD, the Zero-Power Optical Device Driver. It's only for SATA optical disk drives though. A PPA of this kernel is available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/ and instructions on how to install and uninstall it are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds
