Sorry for the delay. I have had a look: there is a folder /var/log/gdm/ but when I try to open it in syslog I get a permission violation.
If I try to edit the /etc/gdm/custom.conf it shows up as empty. Can I simply re-install gdm by sudo apt-get install gdm?
