To #27 - Upgrading to linux kernel 3.9 as mentioned in comment#27 worked fine for me and I'm not facing this "... kernel NULL pointer dereference...." issue anymore. Thus, as mentioned in comment#27, I'm adding the 'kernel- fixed-upstream' tag to this ticket.
Note: I got an error/warning message similar to the one described here [0] when I first installed the linux 3.9 kernel. The linux 3.9 kernel was installed despite this. On rebooting with the 3.9 kernel, wifi didn't work. I switched my wifi drivers [1] from Broadcom bcmwl drivers to the b34 open source drivers since my wifi card was supported by both these drivers. I re-installed the 3.9 linux kernel after installing the b34 wireless drivers and everything worked smoothly. Note: In relation to comment #28, I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1545 too with Ubuntu 13.04 32 bit and Core 2 Duo.
