The opensource video driver you're using doesn't support power management, that's why the battery life is so bad. I suggest you to install 12.04.1 and the proprietary 'fglrx' driver which should give better battery life. Newer version of the driver doesn't support your graphics hardware anymore, so any newer version will be worse.
