Public bug reported:
Occasionally the system randomly slows to a crawl within a matter of
seconds, and then freezes. It no longer responds to mouse or keyboard
input. I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.10 to 13.04 about 5 hours ago and the
freeze happened at least 3 times.
When the issue occurred, the only running software was one or more web
browsers (e.g. Google Chrome and/or Firefox). On one occasion the system
froze just after launching LibreOffice Writer.
There’s something that may be a consequence of the issue or related in
some way. After the latest freeze, when booting, the GRUB console is now
displayed before Ubuntu is started, and I have to press ENTER to launch
the default and only operating system (Ubuntu).
My PC has an Intel Core i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80GHz × 4 with 8GB of RAM, a
450GB hard disk, and an Nvidia Quadro 400 graphics card. I'm running 64
bit Ubuntu 13.04 with the Nouveau drivers, freshly updated from 12.10.
