When you see the keyboard icon, please:
 - press a key
 - select a keymap
 - browse the menus to change your boot options
 - remove both 'quiet' and 'splash' from the kernel commandline
 - boot

and tell us what you see. Do you still get an empty black screen in
that case? Or do you get a wall of text? If you wait a few minutes, do
you eventually get a graphical screen (without first seeing a splash)?
If you wait the same amount of time with a normal boot, do you see the
same graphical screen?
