They might not be the same driver (e.g. the NVIDIA driver being used in 2.6.15
is older than the one you are using with 2.6.20) or your hardware is being
driven in a fashion that the NVIDIA driver no longer agrees with in a new
kernel (e.g. the new kernel is detecting your hardware in a different fashion
causing two devices to conflict...). It's hard to say without detailed
information though. Sometimes you can glean clues as to what the issue is by
looking in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
and the output of running
dmesg
. We would really need to see the output of those things after things become
slow to stand any chance of solving the problem...
